Palliative care is a multi-disciplinary care approach designed to enhance quality of life and reduce suffering for those facing a serious illness. Palliative care can be introduced at the time of a diagnosis and is applicable to anyone with a serious illness, regardless of their life expectancy or the curability of their disease.
“You treat a disease; you win, you lose.
You treat a person, I guarantee you win - no matter the outcome."
Dr. Patch Adams
Founder of the Gesundheit Institute
Examples of palliative care include treatments that can help reduce anxiety, depression, fatigue, constipation, pain, shortness of breath, sleep disturbances and more. Treatments can include things like:
Individual or Group Therapy
Stretching & Exercise
Within palliative care, specialized providers coordinate care to provide optimal support for an individual’s particular needs. A palliative team may include doctors, nurses, physical therapists, pharmacists, chaplains, registered dietitians, psychologists, social workers or other specialists.
Palliative Care is NOT Hospice Care
While the two terms are sometimes used together, palliative care differs from hospice care. Both deliver comfort to the patient, but at different stages of illness. Palliative care begins at any time, ideally at diagnosis, and runs throughout with treatment. Hospice, which is a form of palliative care, begins after treatment has stopped being effective and life expectancy is measured in months or weeks.
Recent studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine (2010) and Journal of Clinical Oncology (2017) have shown that patients who received palliative care as part of their advanced cancer care from the outset report better moods, improved quality of life and prolonged life.
At Robin Care we put empathetic experts and advocates to work for you and your family to ensure that all of your care needs are being met regardless of your disease stage or phase.
River Braun is a former caregiver to his partner of 10 years who was diagnosed in 2010 with Stage 4 cancer. He spent three years getting a crash course in nutrition, oncology, biochemistry, clinical trials, and how to survive when you lose your life partner. Like many survivors and caregivers, River’s experience left him with a deeper appreciation for the brevity of our lives.
